New Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Engine Plant Coming Soon To Wolverhampton
The UK automobile industry has been flourishing greatly in recent times and there is further great news as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) commit to building a major new engine plant in The West Midlands.  The new plant will be based at the i54 Business Park located in the North Wolverhampton/ South Staffordshire area.  Long-term there is likely to be significant job creation that will benefit both the overall UK economy and the Black Country Region in particular.  The i54 Business Park location is already being used by JLR for engine development and has long been regarded as the perfectly placed site by JLR, as it’s strategically close to the company’s Warwickshire HQ.
JLR said that it would certainly invest upwards of £500m in the new plant in the coming years.  The immediate impact of that investment is that it will likely generate more than 750 new jobs, which is really good for the local economy and the British manufacturing sector.  All the jobs will be extremely skilled manufacturing and engineering roles, including new apprenticeships, with hundreds of additional jobs anticipated to be created in supply chain roles for the new plant.
Just hearing this kind of industrial announcement on the TV news or in a newspaper headline can often just slip by one’s consciousness without registering a ‘hit’ on one’s personal radar; but this particular story has some additional personal resonance for me.  At a time when I was researching this article, I unexpectedly encountered the son of a neighbour of mine who had moved his family away to Telford for work reasons some years previously.  This JLR initiative cropped-up in casual conversation and he happily told me he’d already been successfully interviewed and accepted for a supply channel post with JLR and his enthusiasm for his personal and families change in fortunes was a delight to see.  Life-changing events for him and indeed for hundreds more like him.
JLR already has a huge demand for its sports cars and it is expected to increase even more now.  This is why JLR group is getting ready to double up the output from the factory.  Some of the unconfirmed figures suggest that the company could be aiming to hit sales of 600,000 units by the year 2020.  The present engine factory is not due to begin rolling out the production engines until 2015.

The New JLR engine plant in Wolverhampton is just one more example of the British manufacturing industry gaining more and more of a foothold in the global market.  JLR already makes a significant contribution to the UK economy, contributing £7bn Gross Value Added (GVA) in the last financial year and with this further JLR financial investment, things look like they can only get better!
